The Hapgood Family has a long history in this country that dates back to the 18th century in Petersham, Massachusetts. Hapgood's parents, Norman and Elizabeth Reynolds Hapgood, were respected writers and prominent figures. Her father was the editor of Harper's Weekly and wrote books on Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and others. Hapgood, author of The Hapgood Family: Descendants of Shadrach (Boston: T.B. Isabel Florence Hapgood was the compiler and translator of the Service Book of the Holy Orthodox-Catholic (Greco-Russian) Church which has been described as "a noble and Christian gift indispensable to the understanding of the teachings of the Orthodox-Catholic Apostolic Church." A son of Norman Hapgood, author and an editor of Colliers Magazine, who was appointed US ambassador to Denmark by Woodrow Wilson, and Elizabeth Reynolds Hapgood, translator of the works of Constantin Stanislavski, he spent his early years in New York, Paris and the Hapgood family country residence in Petersham, Massachusetts, where he was born.
